Regarding what happens if/when AUUG winds up:

AUUG is an incorporated association, so when it winds up, it must not
distribute its assets among the members, but must pass them to one or
more similar organisations with similar aims. The choice of
beneficiaries, within those guidelines, is up to the outgoing committee.

Until the date of winding up, however, AUUG can continue to do whatever
it wishes with its assets. It can give them away, throw a huge party,
donate them to suitable charities - anything that is consistent with its
aims.

So the requirement that the assets go to a similar organisation with
similar aims is not really much of a limitation, as long as the assets
are dealt with before the organisation winds up and (of course) are
dealt with in good faith and according to the aims of the organisation.

I'm neither advocating it nor opposing it, but donating money to
something like the John Lions Chair would be completely consistent with
the aims of the organisation.

Regards, K.
