People want variable names adjusted too?  How bizarre.  I can see perhaps
wanting a seperate namespace for variables to eliminate naming conflicts,
but you also want to be able to set things like which compilers in one
place, which means at least some sort of communication is required.
And then one gets into defining all sorts of special cases which make
everything very ugly....
