*** Welcome

Welcome to the first issue of the President's Newsletter - a once a month
communique from AUUG HQ letting you know what we are up to and how you can
get involved in the community of Open Computing professionals.

*** AUUG 2006

The main thrust of our efforts for this year is the staging of AUUG 2006 -
The Conference for Unix, Linux and Open Source Professionals. Many thanks
to Lawrie Brown who has volunteered to be the programme committee chair
for this year's conference. You should have already seen a call for papers
and tutorials from Lawrie - please give some thought to presenting at AUUG
2006. It is good experience, and you will get a free registration to the
conference.

The AUUG 2006 web pages are at
http://new.auug.org.au/events_store/auug2006/ - in particular a discussion
page has been set up to solicit your thoughts on the conference programme
at http://new.auug.org.au/events_store/auug2006/program_discussion (see
below).

AUUG is looking for conference sponsors, so if you have any ideas of
organisations that may benefit from an involvement with the conference,
please send a note to auug2006 at auug.org.au.

*** The AUUG Portal - Feature Of The Month

You are encouraged to sign in to the AUUG portal at
http://new.auug.org.au/ and explore the many features it offers, helping
to build a community web site and a valuable information repository.

If you are a paid up AUUG member then you have had a portal login created
for you, and your user name is "First.Last" (substitute your name, and
note the capital letters). You can use the "Forgot your password?" link to
have your password emailed to you. Use this login to access the
member-only features of the site.

If you are not a full AUUG member you can still participate in the portal
community. Simply become an AUUG Associate Member by clicking the "New
user?" link and filling in the form. You must enter a valid email address.

In any case, if you have trouble logging in to the site, report a problem
using the "contact" link (top right of the page), or send an email to
portal at auug.org.au

We are in process of moving content from the old web site to the new - you
can still access the old web site by choosing the "AUUG Classic"
navigation link.

=> So on to this month's feature - discussion pages...

The portal has the ability to add discussions to any page stored in the
site. At the moment, we are using this to elicit comments on the AUUG 2006
programme
(http://new.auug.org.au/events_store/auug2006/program_discussion). If you
are logged in to the site, you can join the discussion by hitting the "add
comment" button, or you can use the various "reply" buttons to follow up
existing comments.

If there are pages on the portal that you think should have an attached
discussion, please send a note to portal at auug.org.au and we will consider
the request.

*** AUUG Board Elections

Election time is nearly upon us again. To help make AUUG the organisation
you want it to be, please consider running for a position on the AUUG
Board.

You can read descriptions of the AUUG Board roles at
http://new.auug.org.au/resources/roles/duties/

Look out for election notices from the Secretary and Returning Officer.

*** Positions Vacant

AUUG is always on the lookout for volunteer to help with aspects of
running the organisation. Currently we need:

* Portal Content Editors - individuals willing to take on an area of the
portal, find content for that area and publish it.

* Portal Content Migrators - individuals willing to work on moving content
from the old AUUG web site to the new.

* AUUGN Editor - someone who can gather content from the portal or from
other locations, and format it into a set of html pages that we can
publish on the AUUGN DVD distribution.

Regards,

David Purdue
President
AUUG Inc.
