SUMMARY:
	- Remider that call for nominations are open.
	- AUUG also seeks volunteers for other activities.
	- Description of committee roles.

Hi all,

ELECTION 2005
=============

Just a reminder that is is less than two weeks to the close of
nominations for this year's AUUG Board elections.

Nominations can be made on the standard form (found at
http://www.auug.org.au/policy/nomination_form.pdf), or on any piece of
paper you like as long as it clearly states who is being nominated,
which positions, who is doing the nominating, and that the nomination is
accepted. The nominators must be financial AUUG members, and the nominee
must be an ordinary, student or honorary life member of AUUG.

You are allowed to nominate yourself. And if you can't find two other
members nearby to nominate you then recruit two new members. Er, I mean,
submit the form to AUUG's Executive Director and she will try to find
nominators for you.

So you know what you are up for, Greg Lehey has written a description of
the roles of the various officers, which you can find here:
http://www.auug.org.au/policy/officer-duties.html - my own effort along
these lines appears below.

Nominations should be received by the 14th of April, and can be
submitted by post (PO Box 7071, Baulkham Hills BC NSW 2153), by fax (=61
2 8824 9522) or by hand to Jon Coombes or Liz Carroll. You can read the
Returning Officer's original call for nominations at
http://www.auug.org.au/pipermail/auug-announce/2005/000182.html

VOLUNTEER FOR AUUG
==================

AUUG is, after all, a society. Which means that AUUG only exists through
the cooperation and will of its members. Running for the board is a
reasonably high commitment to AUUG, but there are many other ways you
can contribute. Some ideas, in no particular order...

- Attend a local chapter meeting.
- Speak at a local chapter meeting.
- Organise your local chapter.
- Organise a small event/one day symposium.
- Write a paper for AUUG 2005 (see
  http://www.auug.org.au/events/2005/auug2005/cfp.html).
- Write an article for AUUGN.
- Take photos at an AUUG event and publish them on the web and/or
  contribute them to AUUGN.
- Find useful free software to put on the AUUG DVD.
- Kick off a controversial discussion on talk at auug.org.au
- Tell your coworkers about AUUG, and why you are a member.
- Tell the board about AUUG, and why you are a member.
- Print the AUUG 2005 Call For Papers and put it on your notice board
  (http://www.auug.org.au/events/2005/auug2005/AUUG2005-cfp.pdf).

If you have other ideas, or just want to get involved, or just want to
lend a hand, then please send me an email - david.purdue at auug.org.au.

AUUG ROLES
==========

To supplement the write-up on the web, here are short summaries of each
role...

President: Head of the organisation, chairs meetings, occassionally
talks to press, reports on overall activity and direction to Board and
members, supervises employees, #1 volunteer.

Vice President: Takes over role of President in cases where the
President is unavailable. Traditionally the Vice President coordinates
local chapters, but this is not formally part of the role.

Secretary: Responsible for the formal running of the organisation
including correspondence, contracts, membership, agenda and minutes of
meetings. May delegate some of this to the Executive Director

Treasurer: Responsible for AUUG's finances.

Ordinary Board Members: contribute to the setting of direction for AUUG.
Usually volunteers for other duties as well, e.g. running events.

There are also some non-board roles, although some of these may be done
by board members.

Executive Director: Liz Carroll, AUUG's full time employee, responsible
for day to day running of AUUG, marketing, logistics.

Returning Officer and Assistant Returning Officer: Conduct the annual
board election.

Press Officer: Generate press releases and ensure they are picked up by
the press.

Public Officer: Formal point of contact between AUUG and the Victorian
government. Must be a Victorian resident - that's the law.

Cheers,

DavidP
